Eduardo Dulay, 61, said conducting technology livelihood trainings for fisherfolk are better than giving them financial assistance or โayudaโ because they can use what they learned in increasing their productivity, and therefore increase their income.
โFinancial assistance is good, but money is easily spent, while technical knowledge is like education that is always with us,โ Dulay, who operates an oyster farm using traditional method in San Fabian town said.
His barangay mates, Domingo Generao, 76; and Pepito Farro, 73, also have oyster farms using the traditional method, and are excited to use the raft method which is efficient, more productive and environment-friendly.
Participants learned through lecture discussions on aquaculture technodemo on oyster culture using bamboo raft method, Philippine Shellfish Industry Roadmap 2021-2025, Basic Hatchery Production of oyster spat, post harvest techniques, and basic entrepreneurship and marketing strategies.
They were also given a brief background and tour around the oyster hatchery facility of the National Fisheries Development Center(NFDC), the venue of the training program.
Supervising Aquaculturist of BFAR-NFDC, Cordelia Nipales, during the closing ceremony said she hoped the participants acquired knowledge that they could share to fisherfolk in their villages.
