Gracing the National Tuna Congress opening ceremony on Sept. 4 was Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., who underscored the important role played by the tuna industry in generating investments, creating jobs, and ensuring the country’s food security.

Meanwhile, a specialized discussion on handline fishing techniques was held on Sept. 3, where DA-BFAR Officer-in-Charge Isidro M. Velayo, Jr. emphasized the importance of tuna handline fishery not just in the livelhood of Filipino fisherfolk, but also in the country’s cultural legacy.

“Unlike many modern fishing methods, handline fishing aligns harmoniously with our goal of preserving marine ecosystems and ensuring the longevity of fish stocks. It stands as a testament to the harmony that can exist between convention and conservation,” Velayo said at the 4th All About Handline Summit.

This year’s Congress, with the theme “Securing the Future of Philippine Tuna Industry: A Competitiveness Agenda,” was packed with various discussions such as sustainability initiatives, cutting-edge technologies, market competitiveness, among others, which were equally aimed at strengthening the collective efforts of all stakeholders toward a thriving tuna sector.
