In its continuous effort to prevent, deter, and eliminate illegal and unsustainable fishing activities, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Ilocos Region trained nominated law enforcement, local government, and bureau’s personnel on the Scientific Examination of Fish Caught Through Underwater Explosion (Fish Examination)-Phase 1 on August 26 to September 6, 2024, at the BFAR-Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Center at Brgy. Lucap, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
The twelve-day extensive training covers four aspects: Values and Fishery Laws, Technical (Fish Anatomy and Taxonomy), Fish Examination (Detection of illegally caught fish), and Criminal & Civil Procedures for Environmental Cases.
These four aspects, including complete attendance, comprise a total of 75% percentile score, while 25% score for the Post-Evaluation, which will be conducted in coordination with the BFAR-Central Office on the last week of November 2024.
PSMS Arniel Amigable, one of the participants, said “Bilang law enforcer, madami akong natutunan hindi lamang batas kundi pati technical, yung mga parte ng isda ay inaral namin sa training na ito. Maraming salamat sa mga facilitators at sa mga resource speakers ng BFAR!”.
All participants of the Phase 1 actively engaged in various lecture discussions, workshops, hands-on activities, quizzes/exams, and practicum provided by the Learning Service Providers from the various operating units of BFAR– the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division; Fisheries Management, Regulatory, and Enforcement Division; Legal Unit, Regional Adjudication Committee, National Stock Assessment Program, Fisheries Production and Support Services Division-Capture Section along with Rolando Rabang of the Bacnotan Lambaklad Cooperative who shared their Best Practices, and the Fisheries Inspection and Quarantine Unit.
One of the trainingβs highlights is the moving exam on Detection and the conduct of market denial in the Suki Market of Alaminos City.
