The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 celebrates with the whole nation the 128th martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, a moment that still resonates in the hearts of many Filipinos through generations. This year, the theme of the celebration is “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas,” which translates to “Rizal in the New Philippines: Life and Lessons We Uphold.”

The life of Dr. Rizal himself serves as a compelling testimony to the bravery, selflessness, and commitment it takes to mold the destiny of a nation. Contemplating his fight, unbroken, for freedom, justice, and the upliftment of his fellow countrymen, one must remind oneself of what he stood for-value which is equally relevant today in every aspect of our lives, including environmental care. Education, patriotism, and environmental awareness-rame directly into the mission of BFAR Region 1 to protect and sustain the fisheries and aquatic resources in this country.

The strong sense of justice that Rizal had and his unceasing efforts toward the welfare of the Filipinos move institutions such as BFAR in their endeavors. BFAR, through its objectives aligned to the vision of a more empowered and sustainable Philippines, dedicates itself to paying tribute to the legacy of Rizal by advocating the responsible management of resources and ensuring the sustainability of food supplies while creating job opportunities.

By tribute, this moment is an invitation to all of us to leave tribute to a hero who gave his life for his country. It’s an invitation for us to pause, reflect, and then ask ourselves how we can contribute to that future Rizal would be proud ofβ€”the future where people’s well-being and the health of our environment go hand in hand.
