The San Ramon Poblacion Mabileg Fisherfolk Association in Sigay, Ilocos Sur successfully completed a two-day Specialized Training on Tilapia Fry to Fingerling Production from January 30-31, 2025.

The training, led by BFAR1-Regional Director Rosario Segundina P. Gaerlan and supported by the Provincial Program Management Support Office (PPMSO) equipped members with the essential aquaculture skills.

The training covered various aspects of tilapia farming, including Biology, Hatchery Management and Operation, Modified Intensive Tilapia Hatchery (MITH), Fry Rearing Technology, Natural Food Production, Water Quality Management, and Simple Cost and Return Analysis. The participants also engaged in hands-on workshops, including practical exercises on proper stocking of fry and cost and return analysis.

The association president expressed gratitude, saying, “Maraming salamat sa oportunidad na naibigay sa amin. Ang training na ito ay napakaimportante para sa asosasyon. Natutunan namin kung paano mag-alaga ng fry hanggang sa maging fingerlings, pati na rin kung paano ang pagcompute ng ipapakain na feeds araw-araw”.

“Itong mga aral na ito ay aming gagamitin upang mapalago ang aming proyekto.”, he added.

A significant event during the training was the awarding of 50,000 tilapia fry to support the association’s fry-to-fingerling production. Furthermore, BFAR-RFO1 inked a Memorandum of Agreement for the KADIWA grant program awarding 100 kilograms of milkfish as start-up capital for marketing activities. This was witnessed by the local government unit officials.

RD Gaerlan delivered the closing remarks, commending the participants’ dedication and encouraging the application of their newfound knowledge to enhance their aquaculture ventures.

“Patuloy nating pagyamanin ang ating kaalaman at kasanayan sa pag-aalaga at pagpaparami ng isda upang masigurong magiging matagumpay at produktibo ang ating mga proyekto. Ang inyong sipag at tiyaga ay susi sa mas maunlad na kinabukasan ng ating sektor ng pangisdaan,” she said.

The successful completion of the training marks is a milestone in the association’s efforts to strengthen local aquaculture, ensuring sustainable income opportunities for fisherfolk in Sigay, Ilocos Sur.
