The remote, landlocked town of Dumalneg in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, traditionally reliant on farming and fishing, is experiencing a transformation, thanks to the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Phase II program.

A recent profiling activity conducted by Area Coordinators (ACs) has identified 25 fisherfolk potential beneficiaries who will receive much-needed support.

This four-day house-to-house interview initiative, conducted in the remote areas of Purok Lagwerta, Maligaya, and Linglingayen, offered a crucial insight into the daily lives of the community.

The assessment not only identified potential beneficiaries for the SAAD program but also provided valuable information on their livelihoods.

The results revealed a diverse group of potential beneficiaries, with 15 from Barangay San Isidro, three from Barangay Cabaritan, and two each from Barangays Quebel and Kalaw. Notably, nine of the identified beneficiaries belong to the Indigenous Peoples Group, specifically the Yapayao and Isneg tribes.

Data collected on fishing and fish-culture practices, resource availability, and socioeconomic status will be instrumental in shaping the program’s direction. This information will guide the implementation of livelihood projects, training, and other support mechanisms aimed at improving the fisheries sector and overall capabilities of the beneficiaries.
