The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Regional Fisheries Office 1 (BFAR-RFO1) demonstrated its commitment to fostering a truly inclusive and equitable workplace by hosting a comprehensive seminar on Gender and Development (GAD). Organized by BFAR1’s Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS), the seminar aimed to deepen understanding of gender equality principles and their practical application within the agency.
This initiative is a crucial component of BFAR1’s ongoing efforts to integrate gender equality into all aspects of its programs and operations. The seminar underscored the importance of gender sensitivity, inclusivity, and the creation of a safe and respectful work environment for all personnel, regardless of gender identity or expression.
Remely B. Lachica, Chief of the Fisheries Production Support and Services Division (FPSSD) and GAD Coordinator at BFAR1, highlighted the significance of the annual seminar. Lachica emphasized that the training is not merely a one-time event, but a crucial step in fostering ongoing gender awareness among staff. This awareness, she explained, directly contributes to improved communication, stronger teamwork, and more effective community engagement.

This year’s seminar benefited from the expertise of Mariz Dafnae Mendoza, a Senior Economic Development Specialist from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and a member of the Philippine Commission on Women’s (PCW) Gender Resource Pool. Mendoza’s presentation provided participants with a solid foundation in fundamental GAD concepts, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to apply these principles effectively in both their professional and personal lives. The interactive nature of the seminar allowed for open discussion and the sharing of diverse perspectives.
The success of this seminar underscores BFAR1’s dedication to creating a workplace where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their full potential. By investing in the training and development of its personnel, BFAR1 is not only promoting gender equality but also strengthening its overall organizational effectiveness and community impact. The agency plans to continue these vital training initiatives in the future.
